Indo Snapshot 3

This is a Dayak/Chinese family cooking in their wooden hut kitchen.

During the Japanese occupation of Indonesia (1942-1945) many Chinese-descent familiesĀ fled into the jungles of Borneo. My grandparents’ families from my Mom’s and Dad’s side did the same. Most of them are merchants, thus they have to quickly pick up jungle farming and survival skills.

They traded with and received help from the jungle people, the Dayaks. Of course, many inter-marriages happened. So I have some Dayak relatives still living in Borneo.
